Interviews are challenging. They require us to draw upon past experiences and in a short period of time, demonstrate that we are the best person for the job. It is therefore important to be as well prepared as possible. Many interviewers can sense when a candidate is giving ‘off the cuff’ answers, so it pays to prepare. This guide will tell you how.
You’re offered an interview, what should you do first?
Speak to us to find out as much information about the company and the interview as possible. Find out:
- The company name and website address if they have one
- The format of the interview. Is it structured or informal? Will you be expected to present anything? What’s next?
Research the company.
It is almost certain you will be asked what you know about the company. You needn’t know the full company history, just some key facts. Find out:
- What they do/sell
- Who their main competitors are
- How many offices they have and where
- What the company culture is like. Is it relaxed? Formal? We can help you with this.Read the job description.
This would have been supplied with your interview confirmation letter/email, ask us if you need a copy. From the job description, uncover the key competencies, key skills and experience. See ‘guide to competency based interviews’ for further information.
Make Notes.
Remember you can take notes into an interview. Just make sure they are for reference only – don’t read from them! It is courteous to let the interviewer know you have brought notes along that you may refer to.
